Vision Quilt at Lighthouse Charter School in Oakland

This year middle school students at the Lighthouse Charter School in Oakland, California will spend three months learning about gun violence in the United States. "Dedicated to serving a student population that has been historically underserved by the traditional school system" the Lighthouse School is lauded in the Bay Area for its innovative approach to education.

Through interdisciplinary curriculum, students at Lighthouse will learn about the history of gun rights, study the mathematical statistics of gun violence, and learn about the psychological and sociological underpinnings of gun violence. Students will also have the opportunity to make Vision Quilt panels.

Artist Lynne Prather, retired pediatrician Jane Hunter, and Vision Quilt Founder Cathy DeForest visited the Lighthouse school on December 5. After hanging a 50-panel installation in the school's library, Cathy  spoke with 65 eighth graders about Vision Quilt project. You can see a video of this conversation below.
