Lighthouse Community Public Charter Schools

Lighthouse Community Public Schools in Oakland, California, began their partnership with Vision Quilt in 2016 after one of their students was murdered. In response to student requests, teachers, Athena Larios and Melanie Swandby, in partnership with Vision Quilt, designed a multidisciplinary curriculum for middle school students. After receiving an Innovation Grant from the John Legend Foundation and the National Writing Project, this curriculum was turned into a free digital toolkit for schools, entitled,  “Addressing Gun Violence Toolkit: Creating Visionaries, Storytellers and Community Activists”. Lighthouse continues to implement this work each year.
